Award underlines importance of Europe
The Treaties of Nijmegen medal, which has been awarded to former European Commission President Jacques Delors, gives recognition to the importance of European cooperation. Verhagen: The Netherlands must stand up for its international reputation
‘The Netherlands must prevent international divisions from damaging its reputation in the world. That’s why Dutch diplomats are increasingly speaking directly to ordinary citizens abroad, particularly in the Muslim world.’ Dutch foreign minister Maxime Verhagen made these remarks at the opening today of a conference on public diplomacy, hosted by the FORUM institute for multicultural affairs.

With his enthusiasm, wide-ranging interests and warm personality, Mr Van Mierlo represented the Netherlands with distinction in all parts of the world during his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1994 and 1998.

Steps needed to bring Israel and the Palestinians closer to peace talks
Both parties must take steps to expedite the resumption of direct negotiations and ensure their eventual success. For Israel, this means halting the construction of further Israeli settlements and opening the border crossings to the Gaza Strip. For the Palestinian Authority, it means continuing its joint security work with Israel and cracking down on the incitement of hatred.

€300,000 for emergency relief to Chile
The Netherlands is giving the International Red Cross €300,000 for emergency relief to Chile. ‘The victims of this terrible earthquake urgently need help, so we are making this money available immediately,’ said foreign minister Maxime Verhagen.

No restrictions on Chernobyl children travelling to the Netherlands
From now on, Belarusian children from the still highly radioactive Chernobyl area will be able to travel to the Netherlands without restriction. In response to questions in the Dutch parliament, foreign minister Maxime Verhagen stated that negotiations with Belarus have removed the last remaining obstacles.

Dutch peacekeeping staff to stay one more year in Sudan
The Netherlands is to extend its contribution to the UN peace mission in Sudan (UNMIS) by one year. The decision was taken today by the cabinet on the advice of foreign minister Maxime Verhagen, defence minister Eimert van Middelkoop and interior minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin.
